Australian Veterinary Microbial Stewardship Conference 2018
■ Sunshine Coast, November 11-13
AUSTRALIAN ap- proaches to the appropri- ate use of antimicrobials in animals (including livestock), through the implementation of out- standing antimicrobial stewardship principles are world-class.
However, there is more that can be done to mini- mise the impact of anti- microbial usage, animal management practices and the environment on the development of an- timicrobial resistance, while upholding our col- lective responsibility to ensure high standards of animal health and welfare are maintained.
The Office of the Aus- tralian Chief Veterinary Officer, Australian live- stock industries and other animal health stakehold- ers have planned an in- augural Australian Vet- erinary Antimicrobial Stewardship Conference to be held on the Sunshine Coast from November 11- 13, 2018.
This conference will at- tract national and inter- national interest from vet- erinary, research, govern- ment, industry, producer and university stakehold- ers, especially given there have been so few veteri- nary AMS conferences, and none in Australia,
despite the long history of action and interest in veterinary AMS by sev- eral stakeholders in the agricultural, community, state and federal govern- ment sectors.
The foundation confer- ence is particularly timely and will provide Australian veterinary stakeholders the opportunity to contribute to, and learn about, the growing number of veteri- nary AMS initiatives under way in Australia and iden- tify opportunities to col- laborate to strengthen these initiatives and address bar- riers that might impede progress to further refine- ment of these AMS efforts.
Pre-conference antimi- crobial use workshop: Sunday, November 11
Surveillance of anti- microbial use tracks the what, when, why and how of antimicrobial use.
An ideal One Health ap- proach to the challenge of antimicrobial resistance would be able to identify not only what resistance is being observed but how antimicrobial use in the animal and human health sectors is contributing to the resistance seen.
Such a system needs to be able to integrate inputs from the veterinary and medical professions and their clients, government
agencies, animal, food and related industries, and laboratories.
The data gathered needs to be able to inform govern- ment policy and resource allocation for the future.
Fundamental questions remain:
• What contribution does food make to AMR? • Does the use of anti- biotics in small animal practice have AMR con- sequences for the human
population?
• What is the future of
antimicrobial use in live- stock production?
Come and hear from your colleagues as to the current state of play in the
animal sector and future plans for tracking antimi- crobial usage in animals in Australia.
Attendance at this work- shop is included with a full registration ticket.
Session commences at 12pm on Sunday, Novem- ber 11.
Registration opens from 11am with light lunch pro- vided.
