Drivers of biosecurity engagement
A PROJECT hearing from egg farmers about their flock health prac- tices is currently being supported by Australian Eggs.
Researchers from Charles Sturt University, the University of Sydney and University of Tasma- nia are running the project to gain a better under- standing of the pieces that make up an integrated biosecurity system.
The project, which fo- cuses on egg farmers with flocks between 1000 and 100,000 birds across all production types, is in three parts.
The first looks at the way the flock health system works in the egg industry.
The second focuses on producers.
And the third uses find- ings from the first two parts to make recom- mendations to improve information, extension
approaches and relevant policies.
The researchers are talking to egg farmers to gain a better understand- ing of the kinds of things influencing decisions in relation to flock health.
This includes where farmers are getting their technical information from and how they are using stakeholders such as government agencies, ani- mal health professionals
and industry associations. It is hoped this will paint a clearer picture of how the pieces of the flock
health system fit together. As a result of this re- search, recommendations for improving flock man- agement information and engagement will be made to ref lect what’s happen-
ing at farm level.
This means farmers will
be able to access informa- tion that is relevant, re-
gardless of their produc- tion system.
Additionally, the rec- ommendations will make other stakeholders more aware of factors influ- encing on-farm decision making so their approach- es and practices can re- flect this.
The results of the project will be shared through re- ports and a series of re- gional workshops.
The researchers are look- ing to engage with more egg farmers so the findings can be thoroughly reviewed before final recommenda- tions are made.
The project is expected to conclude in the first half of 2019.
If your flock size is be- tween 1000 and 100,000 birds and you are inter- ested in getting involved or learning more about the project, contact Brian Furze at bfurze@csu.edu. au
Hazeldene’s relies on Gorman-Rupp wastewater pumps
HAZELDENE’S Chick- en Farm is a world-class producer of free range and RSPCA-accredited poultry, located near Ben- digo in central Victoria.
The company has a state of the art poultry production facility and its products are sold through Coles, Aldi, Woolworths, Harris Farms, IGA, butch- er shops, charcoal chicken stores and smaller special- ty retailers.
Hazeldene’s employs more than 750 people in the local Bendigo area.
In line with a focus on quality, Hazeldene’s was looking for a quality solu- tion for wastewater pump- ing needs.
Having previously tried several different brands of self-priming wastewa- ter pumps, none were able to deliver the quality of service Hazeldene’s engi- neers were looking for.
They needed a pump ca- pable of handling all the solids that form part of the wastewater stream in a chicken process plant (such as feathers, inter- nals, feet and so on), and that was also an extremely reliable self primer.
Hydro Innovations rec- ommended a V3B60-B, which is part of Gorman- Rupp’s range of Ultra V
Series self-priming waste- water pumps.
Technical Services man- ager Adam Hazeldene was well aware of Gorman- Rupp’s quality reputation and was keen to see one installed in his wastewa- ter system to solve the problems they were expe- riencing.
The V3B60-B has a 100mm suction and 80mm
discharge and is capa- ble of handling a 76mm spherical solid along with stringy materials.
The pump can also be placed on a suction lift up to 7.6m, can deliver flows to 50l/ps and can be re- lied upon to prime and re- prime automatically every time it is asked to pump.
For more corrosive envi- ronments, the V3B can be
supplied with 316 internal components, and for abra- sive applications, hardened iron materials can be fitted.
The pump was duly bought and installed, and Adam has had no regrets about his purchase.
