  Traceability and its importance
BUSINESSES are in- creasingly listening to what their customers want and are becom- ing more transparent about where and how their products are farmed, sourced and made.
ingredients forwards and backwards in their supply chains
For businesses to ac- curately promote the origins of these prod- ucts, they need to have the systems in place to trace them back to the source.
Use a mass balance exercise to account for the volume of materi- als at all stages of pro- duction, to make sure that no substitution or mixing of products is occurring.
But how does trace- ability work, and why is it really that impor- tant?
RSPCA Approved certification, more than animal welfare
Traceability in food production is the abil- ity to trace the ingre- dients in a product through a supply chain, all the way back to the source.
The RSPCA Ap- proved Farming Scheme works hard to make sure that any product that carries the RSPCA Approved cer- tification has indeed come from the farms and abattoirs that are regularly assessed against the RSPCA’s animal welfare stand- ards.
When you pick up a product at your local supermarket or gro- cer, chances are that the product has been through multiple steps in a supply chain be- fore ending up in your basket.
To do this, annual assessments of each business in the sup- ply chain of RSPCA Approved products are conducted against our publicly avail- able Chain of Custody Standard.
Being able to trace ingredients is not only important for food safety and quality as- surance, but it also allows businesses to make sure that any public claims made about their product are true and accurate, and that no substitution or product tampering is occurring.
Australians are driv- ing change for some of our country’s most intensively farmed an- imals, simply through their purchasing deci- sions.
Effective and well- managed systems fo- cussed on ensuring product traceability also make it easier for businesses to rectify any issues if they oc- cur.
When these consum- ers pick up a product with an animal welfare claim, this needs to be verifiable to demon- strate how that product is raising the bar for farm animals.
What makes a good traceability system
By choosing a prod- uct with a robust cer- tification process and strict traceability re- quirements, such as RSPCA Approved, conscious consum- ers can support the companies and farm- ers who are leading the way in improving welfare for millions of farm animals every year.
These systems should be able to:
Manage large amounts of product da- ta and information in- cluding the quantity of product supplied and/ or received
Trace products and
Test the systems’ own effectiveness through mock recall exercises
