APSS 2019 breaks records
☛ from P1
tions in the future.
It is also a great op- portunity to socialise and network with people who have similar interests.
As reported in last month’s edition of Nation- al Poultry Newspaper, a ‘speed dating’ mentor/ mentee session was added to the Monday night pro- gram.
Thankyou to Poultry Hub Australia for co-or- dinating this.
From all reports, it was very well received and will be a welcome addi- tion in future years.
Tuesday’s topics were a little more widespread, with papers presented on ‘Layer Nutrition’, ‘Intes- tinal Health’, ‘Alternative Feed Solutions’ and ‘Wel- fare’.
Invited speakers Xabier Arbe Ugalde (Thailand), Dana Stanley (Central Queensland University), Filip Van Immerseel (Bel- gium) and Muhammad Reza Abdollahi (New
Zealand) all presented their recent findings and were very well received.
The Symposium Dinner on Tuesday night is one of the most anticipated social events, with over three-quarters of the del- egates now attending this function each year.
Attendees took a short ferry ride on board the Proclaim (a 1940s Syd- ney ferry) across the har- bor to Sergeants Mess, Chowder Bay.
Though the weather was not ideal, it was still a great trip across and back, as you always get the best views of the city sights from the water.
As attendees have be- come accustomed to in recent years, the music and dancing following dinner was again a great feature of the night, with about 120 people head- ing onto the dancefloor this year.
By far the most inspiring part of the entire confer- ence also happened at the
Symposium Dinner.
Each year, the WPSA
president presents the Australian Poultry Award at the dinner.
This year’s winner was Dr Ben Wells, who made one of the most amazing acceptance speeches any- one had ever heard.
It concluded with a standing ovation from the entire crowd, which lasted well over 30 seconds.
A very worthy and hum- ble recipient, and a great asset of the poultry indus- try for such a long time.
The final day of the con- ference was much more health orientated, with 11 papers on ‘Health and Welfare’ presented, in- cluding invited speaker Stephen Page (Sydney).
The final invited pres- entation was a paper out- lining the 30-year history of the Australian Poultry Science Symposium by Wayne Bryden, who has attended every conference since it began in 1989.
It was a great opportu- nity to reflect on the suc- cesses of our annual con- ference and see how far the conference has come over the past 30 years.
For the second consecu- tive year all records were broken, with 263 delegates attending over the three days of the conference.
In total, 37 contribut- ing papers were presented orally, 37 posters were presented and of course the invited speakers did a wonderful job.
The organisers would also like to take this op- portunity to say a massive thankyou to the sponsors of APSS, as without their continual support over the past 30 years, the event would simply not be what it is today.
Some of these sponsors
have been a part of APSS since the very beginning, and for others this was the first or second year, but the organisers appreciate each and every one of you for helping make APSS
such a world-renowned conference.
Please note dates for APSS 2020 at the Shera- ton Grand Sydney Hyde Park will be February 18- 21, 2020.
