Elanco becomes a dedicated animal health company
ELANCO Animal Health Incorporated re- cently announced it is now a fully independent company, becoming the second-largest exclu- sively dedicated animal health company in the world.
Last September, Elanco listed on the New York Stock Exchange and on March 11 Eli Lilly and Company, Elanco’s for- mer parent company, completed the divestiture of its ownership.
This completes the journey Elanco began in 2017, when Lilly first announced potential strategic alternatives for the 64-year-old animal health company.
Elanco’s independence is a result of its diversifi- cation of the business and expansion of its global footprint – from largely a US and livestock-focused business to an even split between US and inter- national sales.
Furthermore, the com- pany built a strong pet business that now ac- counts for a third of the company globally.
Elanco president and CEO Jeff Simmons said, “This is a historic day for everyone at Elanco.”
“It reflects our team’s hard work over the past two years, the confidence that we have the right strategy and are success- fully progressing the ex- ecution against it.
“With this milestone behind us, we look for- ward to a singular fo- cus delivering innovative solutions and services for our customers – the farm- ers, veterinarians and pet owners that are central to our success.
“We welcome our new Elanco shareholders who join us and offer our ap- preciation to our custom- ers, and Lilly for the dec- ades of support.”
Elanco is a leader in an attractive, growing global animal health market,
which takes advantage of strong industry growth drivers: a global demand for protein – meat, milk, fish and eggs – increas- ing by about 75 percent by 2051.
Furthermore, people have pets and are tak- ing better care of them, which means pets are al- so living longer and may experience diseases of aging, similar to people.
Animal wellbeing is al- so becoming increasingly important to consumers.
Whether a cat, cow or chicken, people want ani- mals to live quality lives and be well cared for.
Sixty percent of con- sumers say they are in- creasingly concerned about animal welfare and how livestock are cared for.
As a fully dedicated animal health company, Elanco will continue to identify targeted in- novations to deliver on its promise of product and service innovation to benefit farmers, pet owners, veterinarians and the animals in their care.
Elanco Australasia act- ing country director Dr Gunter Schuele said, “This milestone marks a new chapter in Elanco’s history as we start our journey as an independ- ent animal health com- pany.”
“Australia already has high rates of pet owner- ship, with the population of cats and dogs continu- ing to increase.
“Australia’s livestock industries are also well positioned to help meet the growing global pro- tein demand.”
Elanco has established a portfolio of trusted global brands and built strong
customer relationships over the years, offering additional solutions and services beyond the prod- ucts to support producers operationally and analyti- cally.
Elanco maintains a live- stock research facility in Australia to ensure fu- ture innovations meet the needs of local customers and conditions.
“We are well positioned to capitalise on the strong industry growth driv- ers and look forward to building a bright future together with our cus- tomers and employees in Australia”, Dr Schuele said.
With 5800 employ- ees and brand presence in 90 countries, Elanco emphasises its ‘Food and Companionship Enrich- ing Life’ vision across the world.
Elanco is proud of the diversity of cultures, ex- periences and approach- es within the company, which are fundamental to accomplish the goals and objectives of the global marketplace, and especially to achieve the expectations of the com- munities where its em- ployees live and work. About Elanco

Smart Farming grants now open
ROUND two of the Smart Farming Part- nerships is now open, providing significant funding opportunities for Australia’s fisher- ies, aquaculture, hor- ticulture and forestry industries.
Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources Sena- tor Richard Colbeck said grants between $250,000 and $4mil- lion are available for sustainable agriculture tools or practices.
“The future of Aus- tralian fisheries, aqua- culture, horticulture and forestry relies on sustainable and smart farming practices,” Sen- ator Colbeck said.
“Through Smart Farming Partnerships, we are giving those within these industries
the opportunity to make their innovative ideas a reality.
“The Federal Govern- ment has a major role in agricultural research and development, and grants can be used to fund research, trials or projects that promote sustainable farming.
“Through round one of the program, the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council re- ceived about $1.5 mil- lion for a project that will improve marine biodiversity outcomes in Tasmanian multi-use waterways by building on established partner- ships between industry, government, natural re- source management and Landcare groups and the community.
“This will support sustainable seafood
production and effec- tive conservation and restoration of marine biodiversity in the state.
“There are also op- portunities for those in- volved in farm forestry and agroforestry that are trialling or develop- ing innovative technol- ogies and methods.
“I encourage anyone within the fisheries, aq- uaculture, horticulture and forestry industry with a smart, sustain- able farming idea to ap- ply.”

It opened on March 19, 2019 and will close on May 17, 2019.
